Data Center Vapor Retarders, Underground Warning Tape, & Dust Containment
Data centers run on uptime. The servers, switches, and storage arrays inside them get plenty of engineering attention, but the building envelope and buried infrastructure that support those systems? That's where failures start. Moisture might migrate through a concrete slab. A fiber optic line could be severed by a backhoe. And dust can easily contaminate a live server hall during an adjacent buildout.
Reef Industries manufactures the reinforced polyethylene films and underground marking tapes that prevent these problems before they reach your balance sheet.
Moisture Control That Matches the Stakes
A data center vapor retarder needs to do one job extremely well: stop water vapor from moving through the building envelope and condensing where it can corrode equipment, degrade flooring adhesives, or promote microbial growth. Griffolyn® FR vapor retarders are reinforced polyethylene laminates with internally bonded cord grids, providing puncture and tear resistance that unreinforced polyethylene films simply cannot match.
Under-Slab Vapor Retarders
The Griffolyn® under-slab vapor retarder product line includes several material grades rated Class A per ASTM E-1745, each suited to different project demands:
- Type 65 and Type 85: Mid-range options offering lower permeance for projects that need additional moisture control beyond the 55FR.
- Type 105: A 7-ply HDPE laminate with triple cord grid reinforcement, built for applications requiring maximum strength and the lowest permeance ratings.
Sheets can be manufactured up to 200' × 200', which means fewer field seams and fewer opportunities for failure across large floor plates.
Wall, Roof, and Fire Code Compliance
Wall and roof assemblies benefit from the same Griffolyn® technology — and for data centers, wall applications represent the largest use of Griffolyn® vapor retarders by a significant margin. The Type 55FR, a 3-ply laminate combining fire-retardant LDPE with a high-strength cord grid, is the most specified grade for these applications.
Fire-retardant performance matters in mission-critical facilities. Griffolyn® FR grades pass NFPA 701 Large Scale testing and carry a Class 1 / Class A Flame Spread Rating per ASTM E-84, satisfying the fire code requirements enforced across data center construction.
Transportation and Storage Protection
Equipment headed to a data center site often spends weeks in transit or staged outdoors before installation. Griff-Shrink® heat-shrinkable covers protect generators, switchgear, UPS cabinets, and mechanical systems from moisture, corrosion, UV exposure, and physical damage during shipping and storage.
3-Ply Griff Shrink is a lightweight option best used for smaller components and short-term staging, while 5-Ply Griff Shrink adds alternating reinforcement layers and a volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) for heavy equipment on longer transit routes or extended outdoor holds.
Both grades shrink tight around irregular shapes using a propane heat tool, eliminating the strapping and secondary packaging that conventional crating requires.
Containment During Construction and Expansion
Data center campuses are rarely finished. Phases overlap, and live production environments often sit adjacent to active construction zones. Griffolyn® anti-static dust partitions keep airborne particulate contained and away from operating equipment. The Type 55 ASFR, a 3-ply laminate with antistatic fire-retardant polyethylene, is purpose-built for environments with sensitive electronics.
Custom fabrication options include reinforced grommets, rope-in-hem, and zipper door access, so partitions fit the space rather than the other way around.
Buried Utility Protection
Data centers depend on extensive underground infrastructure: power feeds, chilled water loops, and increasingly dense fiber optic networks. A single accidental dig-in during site work can knock a facility offline and trigger costly repairs.
Detectable and Non-Detectable Warning Tape
Terra Tape® detectable underground warning tape is an extrusion-laminated marking system that sits above buried lines and signals excavation crews to stop before they cause damage. Detectable versions contain a metallic tracer that can be located with standard pipe and cable locators even before digging begins, while non-detectable underground utility warning tape provides a visual-only alert at a lower price point. Both grades follow APWA color codes, making it straightforward to distinguish between power, water, communications, and other buried services across a campus.
Fiber Optic Line Protection
Terra Tape buried fiber optic warning tape is available in the Extra Stretch™ construction, which stretches up and out of the ground in one continuous piece when contacted by equipment, giving operators an unmistakable visual alert. For data centers running high-count fiber between buildings, this is a critical layer of protection against service interruptions and emergency splice repairs. All Terra Tape products can be custom printed with facility names, cable types, phone numbers, and warnings in any language.

Frequently Asked Questions About Data Center Vapor Retarders, Underground Utility Warning Tape, & Dust Containment
What does "vapor retarder" mean, and what permeance rating do I need?
A vapor retarder reduces the rate of moisture transmission and is rated at 0.1 perms or less under ASTM E-1745. For most data center slab applications, this meets performance requirements. Projects requiring permeance below 0.01 perms should discuss specifications with Reef Industries' engineering team.
What ASTM classifications should I specify for a data center slab?
ASTM E-1745 Class A is the standard for high-performance facilities. Class A requires a minimum tensile strength of 45 lb/in, a puncture resistance of 2,200 grams, and a permeance rating of 0.1 perms or less. Griffolyn® vapor retarders meet Class A requirements and are tested by certified independent laboratories.
How does detectable warning tape work?
Detectable tape contains a metallic element, typically an aluminum foil or wire, that reflects a signal from standard electromagnetic pipe and cable locators. Crews can trace the line from the surface before breaking ground, reducing the chance of accidental dig-ins. Non-detectable tape relies solely on visual identification once the soil above it is excavated.
