Construction Site Materials: Caution Tape, Vapor Barriers & Floor Protection

Construction projects have a way of finding the weakest link in any product. Wind, rain, foot traffic, dropped tools, forklift wheels, and the occasional unplanned weather event all stress-test whatever's protecting the work. That's where we can help.

Reef Industries has spent more than 65 years making the reinforced film laminates that contractors, GCs, and project managers reach for when standard poly sheeting won't make it through the schedule. Manufactured in Houston, fabricated to project dimensions, and stocked across a deep product catalog, our materials cover the protection, containment, and marking jobs that come up on nearly every construction project.

These are the Reef Industries products that construction teams order most often. Each one is available in stock sizes for fast shipment or custom-fabricated to project specs.

  • Construction Zone Tape: Heavy-duty printed barricade tape for marking active work zones, with stock and custom imprint options that hold up to extended outdoor exposure.
  • Concrete Slab Floor Protection: Transguard® 2000 and 4000 protection sheets that shield finished concrete from foot traffic, dropped tools, and liquid spills during follow-on trades.
  • Contaminated Equipment Covers: Reinforced covers for nuclear, abatement, and remediation work, available with fire-retardant, low-contamination, and incinerable formulations.
  • Crowd Control Barricade Tape: High-visibility tape for restricting site access, directing pedestrian traffic, and managing the public boundary around active work areas.
  • Customization Services: Custom printing, sizing, and fabrication services that produce materials sized to project specs with company branding, safety messaging, and contact information.
  • Water Diverter Tarps: Fire-rated leak diversion tarps that reroute roof leaks away from finished surfaces and equipment, easy to install when the weather catches a project mid-finish.

Vapor Barriers and Moisture Control

Below-grade and slab-on-grade work depends on vapor barriers that can survive backfill, rebar tying, and pour day without tearing. Griffolyn® vapor barriers are reinforced polyethylene laminates with internally bonded cord grids, which give them the puncture and tear resistance needed to handle real job-site conditions.

Multiple grades are rated Class A per ASTM E-1745, and sheets can be fabricated up to 200' × 200' to reduce field seams across large floor plates. The same Griffolyn technology extends to wall and roof vapor retarders for envelope detailing.

Floor and Surface Protection

Newly placed concrete is one of the most expensive surfaces on a project, and it's often exposed to construction traffic before it's ready.

Transguard® concrete slab floor protection sheets shield finished slabs, decorative floors, and polished concrete from foot traffic, dropped fasteners, paint splatter, and liquid spills during follow-on trades.

Transguard® 2000 is a lightweight disposable option for shorter projects, while Transguard® 4000, a polypropylene non-woven fabric with a polyethylene backing, handles tougher conditions and can be reused across multiple jobs.

Site Marking and Crowd Control

The first job on most sites is keeping people out of areas they shouldn't be in. Banner Guard® caution tape and printed barricade tape mark hazards, restrict access, and identify work zones with messages that hold up to wind, sun, and weeks of exposure.

Stock imprints include "CAUTION CONSTRUCTION AREA," "DANGER," and "HARD HAT AREA," and any roll can be custom printed with company names, project numbers, or safety messaging in up to four colors. The Super Strength II grade carries 390 pounds of tensile strength and meets OSHA 29 CFR Part 1926.502, which qualifies it for fall protection perimeter use on elevated work areas.

Containment and Weather Response

When a roof leak threatens active interior work, water diverter tarps reroute the leak away from finished surfaces, equipment, and materials below. Griffolyn® leak diversion tarps are fire-rated, lightweight, and quick to deploy, which is exactly what's needed when a storm catches a project mid-finish.

For abatement, demolition, and remediation work, Armorlon® contaminated equipment covers and containment tarps provide the protective coverings required to meet environmental regulations, with fire-retardant and low-contamination options available for nuclear and critical equipment applications.

Frequently Asked Questions About Construction Site Materials

What's the difference between Griffolyn and Armorlon for construction use?

Griffolyn is a reinforced polyethylene laminate line, typically chosen for vapor retarders, leak diverters, and environmental containment. Armorlon includes both PVC-coated polyester scrim and woven HDPE products, which are heavier-duty options for containment tarps, fumigation covers, and applications where abrasion resistance is critical. Most projects use both lines in different applications.

How are vapor retarder seams typically handled in the field?

Field seams are sealed with manufacturer-supplied pressure-sensitive seam tape, which is available in clear, white, or black to match the substrate. Penetrations (rebar, plumbing rough-ins, conduit) are sealed with the same tape applied in a boot detail. Reef Industries provides installation guidance with each shipment, and the technical team is available for project-specific questions during the submittal phase.

Do you offer same-day or expedited shipping for emergency jobs?

Stock items typically ship same-day or next-day from the Houston, Texas, facility. Custom-fabricated items can be expedited with rush production, which is common for storm response and emergency containment work. Calling the order line directly is the fastest path for urgent needs.
